Realism | Contemporary art
Realism in art is an approach that emphasizes accurate, objective depiction of the world, often focusing on everyday subjects and situations. Realist artists attempt to represent the world as it appears, without adding any idealization or personal interpretation. The goal is to create a faithful and objective record of what is seen and experienced. Realism emerged in the mid-19th century as a response to the Romantic movement, which emphasized emotion, imagination, and the supernatural. Realism sought to restore a focus on the concrete, observable world and its social realities, often depicting scenes of working-class life or rural landscapes. Today, realism remains an important and influential style across many genres, including painting, sculpture, literature, and film.
