Nude | Contemporary art
The depiction of nudity in art has a long history, dating back to ancient times where it often symbolized fertility and was associated with religious beliefs. Ancient Greece particularly embraced the nude as a symbol of ideal beauty. Nudity is not meaningless nor does it always mean the same thing. The nude figure in art has generally reflected, with few exceptions, social standards of aesthetics as well as morality of the certain time period. While nudity in art can be associated with eroticism, it has also reflected social and moral standards of the time. Erotic art has existed in various forms across civilizations, with some cultures incorporating it into spiritual beliefs and others reflecting cultural practices.
